What It Means to Be a Teacher

I have always believed that I am meant to make a positive impact on others' lives. I am a Teacher, a mom, a Counsellor, and a role model to my students. Teaching is challenging and sometimes stressful, but the rewards are deeply fulfilling.

For me, being a teacher goes beyond the daily classroom routine. It’s about building meaningful, supportive relationships that shape my students both academically and socially. They are a part of my life, always watching, seeking guidance, and looking for my approval. They respect me, and I respect them in return. I am constantly aware of their needs, their insecurities, and their challenges. I prioritize them. I nurture them. I care for them. I worry about them.

Yes, they test my patience. Yes, sometimes they don’t listen. But I still care!

And they appreciate me — every single one of them.

They love me. And I love them as if they were my own.

This is what being a teacher means to me. This is what inspires me. What I give and receive in return is truly wonderful. My strength lies in building confidence, self-esteem, and kindness in my students.

They enjoy my classes. And I cherish the opportunity to make a lasting difference in their lives.

Meet Mrs Jackie Pienaar

Grade 2 Teacher

I am Jackie Pienaar. I live in Linden with my husband, William. We have three sons, and a beautiful golden retriever called Macgregor. I started teaching at Risidale Primary School in 2004 as a substitute teacher in Grade 1. Since then, I have taught every grade except Grade 3. I have taught alongside many talented teachers who have positively influenced my life. I had the privilege of working with my sister for several years. On my birthday she would bring her whole class to the corridor under my balcony and sing Happy Birthday.

I have been involved in various extra mural activities, PTA initiatives and school events. One of the most memorable ones was turning the hall into an Aladdin’s Cave for a school play. We sewed hundreds of metres of black and jewel coloured fabric into curtains and made a cave entrance. I also accompanied the cross-country runners to a 9-hour relay race which was an incredible experience for them. My favourite extra mural has been the informal garden club with the Grade 1 and 2 learners.

My sons have contributed to and benefitted from Risidale in sport, academic and cultural activities. The oldest was the top scholar in his Grade 7 year. My second son was the Head Boy and a Junior city councillor for Johannesburg. My youngest son was the top cultural student and cross-country runner. He reluctantly played the piano at many assemblies. He has returned to Risidale as a chess coach. They have all sanded and varnished desks and painted classroom walls, counted reading books to help their Mom as a Teacher.

There has always been a special feeling at Risidale Primary School that brings learners and teachers back.
